The history of the M62, known as "Szergej" in Hungary, began in 1965 with the delivery of the world's first locomotive from Lugansk (M62 001). A further 288 locomotives were delivered to MAV, 15 of which were broad gauge versions. The locomotives took over the heavy freight traffic and thus brought the older steam locomotive types to an early end. Some of these robust machines are still in service today.
