The Netherlands has many special features. And this also applies to the railroads in our neighboring country. Early on, it placed great value on its own vehicle creations, which often made a name for themselves with unusual designs, and not just in their home country. When the Dutch state railroads NS wanted to modernize their intercity services in the 1970s, they developed a very unusual multiple-unit train with panoramic driver's cabs above the carriage gangways together with the German wagon manufacturer Talbot. This gave the ICMs, as the NS called their new sets, a really massive appearance. And as it was possible to access the next unit at the head ends, the modern but rustic vehicles were called "Koploper". The 144 "Koplopers" built soon shaped modern intercity transport in the Netherlands. When Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport was connected to the rail network in 1986, NS painted two "Koplopers" in the colors of the two national airlines. ICM-4011 was given the livery of the Royal Dutch Airline KLM. Because of the bulky head shape, this train was reminiscent of the famous jumbo jets. ICM 4012 drove through the country in the white and red Martinair design and also caused quite a stir - as a sleek jetliner on rails.

Prototype: Dutch Railways (NS) class ICM-1 "Koploper" three-car electric multiple unit as an intercity multiple unit. Version in the "Martinair Holland" design. 1 motor car as end car mBk 2nd class, 1 center car AB 1st/2nd class, 1 cab control car as end car sBk 2nd class. Multiple unit car road number 4012. Operating condition June 1986.

Model: The train has an mfx+ digital decoder and extensive sound functions. 3-part design. The motorized end car has a die-cast frame. The locomotive has controlled high-efficiency propulsion with a flywheel. 2 axles powered in one bogie. Traction tires. Driver's cabs in both end cars with interior fittings. Directional power supply via the front power car. Special close couplers with sliding guide. Interior lighting installed as standard. Triple headlights that change over with the direction of travel and 2 red marker lights as well as interior lighting in conventional operation, can be controlled digitally. The headlights at end car sides 2 and 1 can each be turned off separately in digital operation. The headlights have prototypical light yellow and red LEDs. Warm white LEDs are used for the interior lighting. Detailed design of the running gear and body. The "Scharfenberg" coupler is shown on the end cars. An additional rigid coupler connection is included for double traction. In standard condition, the end cars have closed transfer doors. It is possible to depict the swing doors with bellows pushed to the side on one end car with the included plug-in part. Total length of the train 86.6 cm.

Highlights:

  • Built-in interior lighting as standard.
  • With mfx+ digital decoder and extensive operating and sound functions.
  • Train destination display: Amsterdam CS, Schiphol.
