The progressive electrification of the Western Railway created a need for electric freight locomotives. The electrical part of the total of 22 locomotives was supplied by AEG, the mechanical part of the first 15 by the StEG locomotive factory. The remaining 7 machines were produced by Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf. The machines were used by the Deutsche Reichsbahn as E88.2. They returned to Austria in the early 1950s and were used again as class 1280. By 1976, all of the locomotives had been decommissioned.
