Model: The locomotive has a digital decoder and extensive sound functions. Controlled high-efficiency propulsion with a flywheel in the boiler. 3 axles powered. Traction tires. Locomotive and tender constructed mostly of metal. Built-in smoke unit will work in conventional operation, can be controlled digitally. Three-light headlights that change over with the direction of travel will work in conventional operation and can be controlled digitally. Firebox flickering can be controlled digitally. The cab lighting can also be controlled digitally. Maintenance-free LEDs are used for the lighting. Minimum passable radius 360 mm. Piston rod protection tubes, brake hoses, and screw couplers are included. Engineer and stoker figures are included as standard. Length over the buffers approx. 19.9 cm.
Highlights:
- Especially finely detailed metal construction.
- Many separately applied details.
- Triple headlights.
- Cab lighting can be controlled digitally.
- Firebox flickering can be controlled digitally.
- Smoke unit installed as standard, can be controlled digitally.
- The locomotive has a digital decoder and extensive operating and sound functions.
- Buffer height according to NEM.DCC, mfx, and RailCom capable.
A passenger car set to go with this locomotive will be offered under item number 23225 exclusively for the MHI.
Large-scale operation: Steam Locomotive 78 1002 At the beginning of the 1950s, the acceleration of suburban and urban express service enjoyed high priority on the young German Federal Railroad, but the stock of tender locomotives that could be used for this purpose was clearly limited. Towed tender locomotives, on the other hand, were plentiful, and so it made sense to examine the large stock of class 38.10-40 locomotives (Prussian P 8) for a use in this regard. The DB therefore attempted to convert this locomotive into a tender locomotive in order to save the necessary turning at the destination station. Based on the suggestions of Prof. Mölbert, Hanover, and in cooperation with the BZA Munich, the Krauss-Maffei company was commissioned in 1951 to equip the 38 2890 and 2919 with short tenders. The boiler, motive power unit and running gear remained almost unchanged. Only the front bogie was modified by installing a new pivot housing to provide more lateral play. Furthermore, an automatic resetting device was fitted. The cab, on the other hand, which was now closed on all sides, was completely rebuilt in welded construction. The newly developed two-axle short tender was connected to the machine by a strong drawbar, which had a return device based on a Krauss-Helmholtz frame. The coal could be removed through a circular cutout in the rear wall of the cab, which was sealed off from the tender by a rubber bellows. After the conversion, the two locomotives were considered to be tender locomotives with the wheelset sequence 2'C2' and were therefore given the road numbers 78 1001 (ex 38 2919) and 1002 (ex 38 2890). They were certified as having a maximum permissible speed of 100 km/h in both directions of travel, but speeds in excess of 60 km/h were said to be problematic when the locomotives were running in reverse. More machines were not rebuilt because these investments were no longer worthwhile due to the progressive structural change. Initially, the two locomotives ran in the Munich BD area from 1953, and later they were used in the Lake Constance area. Both locomotives were shut down as early as 1959 and retired in 1961.
