Covered freight car Gs(-uv) 212, DB, ep.4, no.01 80 125 2 313-2
At the beginning of the 1950s, the still young Deutsche Bundesbahn mainly had obsolete flat roof cars G 10 and G 02 in the area of covered freight cars, which had long since been due for refurbishment. A complete overhaul did not appear to make economic sense, and there was not enough money in the budget for the construction and acquisition of new cars. It was therefore decided to rebuild and modernize the old cars: among other things, the underframe, springs and buffer length were brought up to UIC standards, and the body was also built according to UIC guidelines with - compared to the G 10/G 02 - larger doors and ventilation openings. Starting in the mid-1950s, about 14,000 Gms 54s were put into service.
From 1964, the cars ran under the designation Gls 205. The PVC roof skin applied to the wooden sheathing during conversion was gradually replaced by a steel roof in the 1970s.
