The class 98.8, the bayer. GtL 4/4, was first put into service by the Royal Bavarian State Railways in 1911. With only a few modifications, it was built until 1927. The locomotives proved themselves very well in operation and, with an output of 450 HP, were the most powerful Bavarian local railway locomotives. The small, unpretentious machines were used by the German Federal Railways on many Bavarian local railway lines until 1953.
