As the little sister of the twin-engine V200, DB developed the single-engine V100 for light mainline service. Both had diesel-hydraulic power transmission in common. The 1955 type program included the V100, which, with its retracted front ends, promised simplified maintenance, a safe stop for shunters and, with 1100 hp, sufficient reserves for branch line service. The engine system and transmission had already been tested in the series V200.0 built from 1956, and teething troubles had been partially eliminated when the six pre-series V100s were ready for test runs in 1958. After their completion and various design modifications, series delivery began with V100 008. 364 units of the 1100 hp locomotive, later designated V100.10, were procured by DB. In the meantime, the Maybach MD 650 diesel engine with 1100 hp had been replaced in V100 006 by the 1350 hp Mercedes twelve-cylinder MB 835 Ab engine. Initially, however, the weaker MB 820 Bb and MD 650 were installed. However, as the operating service indicated a need for more powerful locomotives, the DB procured another 370 of the 1350 hp version classified as series V100.20 (later class 212) from 1962. This differed from the V100.10 (later the class 211) mainly due to the longer front end with a modified cooling system. As the V100.10s often worked at their performance limits, their reliability declined and so, from 1970 onwards, the engine was replaced on a large scale with the more powerful MTU-12V 652 TA10, which had proven its worth in the V100.20s ex works since 1962. In the 1980s, around a third of the 211s had the more powerful engine. The front snow ploughs, which were fitted to around 140 of the 211 and 120 of the 212 at least some of the time, were striking from the outside. 55 locomotives of the 211 and 230 of the 212 were equipped with push-pull and multiple traction control. More than 150 locomotives of both types taken out of service by DB were taken up in France and more than 50 others in Italy. The Austrian ÖBB fought a temporary locomotive shortage with 34 211s classified as class 2048 and used them until 2004. Today, numerous 211, 212 and 213 locomotives can also be found on private railroads in Germany.
