Standard coach I of the Rhaetian Railway
The commissioning of the EW I standard coaches, which were procured in three lengths, enabled the Rhaetian Railway to considerably increase the comfort of its train services from 1962 onwards. For the main network (StN), 18.42 m long first class coaches A, mixed first/second class coaches AB and second class coaches arrived by 1966. Slightly modified coaches finally followed in 1969 for the Arosa line. Somewhat shorter first-class coaches A with a length of 16.97 m followed in 1968 for the "Glacier Express" trains, so that an increase in comfort could also be achieved here together with newly procured coach material from the partner railroads FO and BVZ. In 1968, the fleet of coaches on the operationally isolated Bernina line was finally upgraded with the mixed first/second class coaches AB 1541-1546 and the second class coaches B 2307-2314. In 1972, the delivery of the second-class coaches B 2451-2460 ended the large passenger coach modernization programme of the EW I. In order to be able to run on the narrow 50 m radii, these coaches were significantly shortened to 14.19 m. The new Bernina coaches were also used for connecting coach services on the Bernina line to Chur or later to Davos without changing trains and could therefore be seen almost anywhere on the network. They formed the forerunner of today's popular "Bernina Express".
Due to its universal applicability, we have selected the shortened EW I as our first passenger car model in the large 0m gauge. In terms of detailing, the vehicles are of course in no way inferior to the Ge 4/4 II bogie locomotive or the freight car models. Numerous details on the car floor or inside the car body through to the elaborate interior fittings with shelves or waste garbage cans are the special features of a car family that also sets standards for the prototype.
