Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) class 86.0-8 tank steam locomotive. Basic paint scheme black with red running gear. Version with 4 boiler superstructures. Welded water boxes with long cutouts over the cylinders and rounded edges. Triple headlights with DB reflective glass lamps. Bell mechanism, turbo dynamo on the left, smoke box door without central lock with license plate in the middle, without Indusi, coal box with straight top board. Road number 86 507, home of BD Wuppertal, Dieringhausen depot. Operating condition around 1964.

Model: The locomotive has an mfx+ digital decoder and extensive light and sound functions. The locomotive has controlled high-efficiency propulsion with a flywheel in the boiler. 4 axles powered. Traction tires. Locomotive constructed mostly of metal. The locomotive is equipped for the 72270 smoke unit. The triple headlights and smoke unit contact change over with the direction of travel, will work in conventional operation, and can be controlled digitally. Two red marker lights can be turned on separately in digital operation. The cab lighting can also be controlled digitally. Maintenance-free warm white and red LEDs are used for the lighting. Numerous attached metal grab irons and lines. Minimum passable radius 360 mm. Piston rod protection tubes, brake hoses, heating cables and imitation screw couplers are included separately. Length over buffers 16.0 cm.

It was the time of the Roaring Twenties when the German State Railroad, newly founded in 1920, made a great leap forward, especially in vehicle technology. Countless types of locomotives had been inherited from the dissolved state railroads, which were complicated and uneconomical to maintain. The situation was particularly critical on branch lines, where around 50 different classes of locomotives were used across the country, in addition to the main line locomotives that were doing well there. A committee set up in a hurry to standardize locomotives was tasked with designing uniformly constructed classes that contained as many interchangeable parts as possible: a quantum leap in the very fragmented vehicle procurement of the time. The choice fell on a 70-ton design with four drive axles and one leading and one trailing axle. The series designation 86 was intended for this type of locomotive with around 1000 HP. The first of 16 pre-series locomotives came onto the Reichsbahn tracks in 1928. And thus began a true success story. The locomotives proved to be outstanding - and not only on branch lines. With a top speed of 70 or 80 km/h and high tractive power, they could also be used in passenger and local freight services on main lines. By 1943, 774 units of the class 86 had been delivered to the Reichsbahn, with all the well-known locomotive factories such as BMAG, Borsig, Krupp, Henschel & Sohn, Maschinenfabrik Esslingen, Orenstein & Koppel and Schichau (Elbing) involved in their construction. This made the 86 one of the most frequently built standard locomotives, with no other standard tender locomotive type even coming close to its number of units, and there were numerous design improvements over the long production period, some of which also changed the appearance of the successful locomotive. A striking feature was the water box introduced in 1941 from 86 378 with the lower recess extended at the front. This improved accessibility to the control rod lever, the Kuhn loop and the swing arm. 365 class 86 locomotives were on the network of the later German Federal Railways after the end of the war, all but one of which were transferred to the operating stock. In 1957, another 14 locomotives from the Saarbahnen stock were added. A second heyday of the popular and reliable "eighty-six" then began at DB. She now really had to be a jack of all trades: On main lines, they could be seen in front of long passenger trains and sometimes even express trains, and large stations such as Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Kassel were served on a daily basis. Freight trains were just as much a part of this universal workhorse's schedule as shunting duties at freight yards. The 86 was the dominant class on numerous branch lines, especially in Bavaria and Franconia. There, they could still be seen steaming through charming landscapes in front of ancient local railroad cars for a long time, and they also continued to prove their worth in the typical rural local freight train service. The importance of the 86 in the economic miracle era is shown by the retirement statistics: Although 595 units of the V 100 series had already been delivered by the end of 1964, the 86 stock at that time still amounted to a proud 352 units. From 1965, however, its star began to fall rapidly. In the end, only 38 machines were given a new number according to the EDP numbering system introduced in 1968, and the last three 86s were sidelined by DB in 1974. Ten "eighty-sixes" can still be admired in Germany today, 86 333 and 744 of the Pressnitz Valley Railway are even operational and, under steam, are a reminder of one of the most successful locomotive types on German rails.

You will find passenger cars to go with these locomotives such as "Donnerbüchsen" or freight cars to go with them in the current Märklin H0 assortment. Another freight car set can be found in the Trix H0 assortment under item number 24140, with information on the AC wheel sets needed.

Whether in front of a short express train, in front of long passenger trains, in front of local train sets or in freight traffic: the 86 brings variety to the model railroad. And stories can be told from the heyday of the railroad, when goods were still transported by rail to the furthest corners of the country.
