With 25 examples built by ALCO, the Class 4000, also known as the Big Boy, was the largest steam locomotive in service with the Union Pacific. There was also no other comparably large steam locomotive in the world. Predominantly, the engines were used on the steep and winding lines of the Rocky Mountains. Since 2019, the locomotive with the road number 4014 is again actively under steam, making it the largest operational steam locomotive today. Like the smaller Challenger 3985, it is operated by the Union Pacific Railroad.
The Kato model is a completely new design and features two five-pole motors with flywheels, a light change and a fabulously detailed look.
