After the Pomeranian provincial administration took over the operation of the former Lenz-operated small railway lines in Pomerania in 1910, new, more powerful locomotives were purchased for these lines in 1913, which were supplied by the Vulcan locomotive factory in Stettin. Two of these locomotives of the "M" series were also used on the Rügen branch line, where they proved themselves very well. With an output of 200 HP and a top speed of 30 km/h, the locomotives, which weighed around 23 tons, were able to cope with all the tasks that arose. Due to the positive experience, another locomotive was ordered in 1925 - this time as a superheated steam locomotive - and was given the series designation Mh. With the same basic principle, it had a slightly higher output of 235 and was also around 2 tons heavier and slightly larger than its predecessors. After the takeover of the Rügen branch line by the DR in 1949, the 3 locomotives were given the class numbers 99 4631 to 99 4633. They were in service on Rügen for a long time, but at the beginning of the 1990s, 99 4632 and 99 4633 were completely overhauled, including receiving new boilers and new cylinders. After the locomotives used to run in the DR livery of black with red wheels, 99 4632 was painted green, but then turned black again a few years later. Since summer 2020, 99 4633 - as 53 Mh - has been running in a very attractive dark green livery.
