Rail bus - the prototype It was called the savior of the branch line, the red hummer or simply the Uerdingen rail bus, because most VT 98s were built in the Uerdingen wagon factory. They were powered by two 150 HP Büssing underfloor engines, the same engine, by the way, as in the Berlin double-decker buses. The six-speed transmission was supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen AG. In addition to the VT 98 railcars, there was also the VB 98 sidecar (in some cases with a luggage compartment) and the VS 98 cab control car. They were used for passenger train service on secondary lines, usually in the VT+VB+VS configuration. However, shorter two-car units VT+VS and longer units with up to six cars were also used.

At the end of the 1980s, the VT 98 (or 798, as it was called from 1968) was gradually replaced by the class 628, which in turn already has more modern successors such as the Talent.
