Today's RAe 4/8 1021 ("Red Double Arrow") received its unforgettable reputation in 1946, when the train was made available to the then British ex-Prime Minister for his painting vacations on Lake Geneva. Since then, this train has been known as the "Churchill Arrow" thanks to his trips with Sir Winston Churchill. Churchill visited Bern and Zurich, among other places, where he was greeted with cheers by the population. On September 19, 1946, Churchill gave a visionary speech at the University of Zurich in which he called for the establishment of a kind of United States of Europe with his key phrase: "Let Europe arise. Even before it was put into service, the red double railcar intended for social travel was presented as Re 4/8 301 (from 1948 as RBe 4/8 651, from 1959 as RAe 4/8 1021) at the unforgotten national exhibition "Landi" in Zurich in 1939. The SLM (mechanical part), the SWS (interior equipment) and the three electrical companies BBC, MFO and SAAS (all electrical part) were involved in the construction. In order to achieve a reliable vehicle with the shortest possible construction time, no new technical ground was broken, but rather, as far as possible, use was made of parts and construction methods already known from the single-unit "Red Arrows" that had entered service shortly before. The double railcar consists of two cars of equal length, independent of each other, each with two two-axle bogies, the inner one of which is equipped with one motor per wheelset. A large part of the electrical equipment and auxiliary operations, such as transformers, control system, compressor and braking equipment, among others, was housed in the low front ends. However, the special control via so-called "traveling transformers" caused recurring problems with longer stays in the responsible Zurich main workshop. After 1946, the train was henceforth called "Churchill-Arrow" and continued to be used for excursions and special trips in Switzerland until it suffered fire damage in 1979 and was later sold for scrap value. In 1996, the Mittelthurgaubahn (MThB) acquired the vehicle and it was refurbished with more modern electrical components. In the course of the insolvency of MThB, the "Churchill-Arrow" came back into the hands of SBB in 2002. In the meantime, it has become an operational part of the SBB passenger service and is now used as the oldest railcar about 50 to 70 times per year, covering about 20,000 km/year as part of individual charter trips and public adventure tours.
