Information about the prototype: With the type 39 express train coaches, the Reichsbahn wanted to finally usher in the age of express transportation and increase the speeds of passenger trains. In order to achieve this, the disturbing factors for air turbulence on previous types of carriages had to be reduced. As was already the case with the type 35 coaches, more emphasis was placed on welding technology for the type 39. However, the main focus of the designers was on the smoothest possible outer shell of the vehicles. The areas under the frame and around the bogies in particular had previously caused a lot of air resistance, so it was obvious to cover these parts of the vehicle with side panels. The eponymous apron was invented. However, the design also featured other sophisticated refinements for the time. For example, the entrance doors were positioned on the outside. An elaborate folding mechanism ensured that the doors opened together with the side panels despite the pivot point being deep in the carriage. The side window frames were also flush with the outer sheet metal. In order to realize the necessary window shaft, the carriages became about 40 mm wider below the parapet strip. In total, the Deutsche Reichsbahn planned to purchase over 1,000 carriages in various designs. Due to the war, however, only 543 series vehicles were delivered between 1939 and 1940, of which 103 were AB4ü-38s, 310 C4ü-38s, 65 ABC4ü-39s and 65 BC4ü-39s. Parallel to the seat coaches, Mitropa initiated a revision of the WR4ü-35 design with the wagon industry. Unlike the seat coaches, however, this was not a completely new design. Instead, the entrance doors were moved outwards and the frame apron was added. The inwardly offset windows were retained, as was the different window height. Due to the late delivery of the carriages, their use was rather limited until express train services were discontinued due to the war. Many carriages were therefore also stored in supposedly safe stations to protect them from destruction. The fact that this was not always successful is demonstrated by various wagons that were written off as war losses. Most of the vehicles that survived the war undamaged remained in West Germany. In addition to some confiscations by the occupying powers, the German Federal Railroad largely refurbished the wagons for its new F-train network, which was still under construction. The apron coaches were ultimately the most modern and comfortable passenger coaches on German rails at the time. With the increased deliveries of the new 26.4 m m coaches from the second half of the 1950s, DB increasingly used the vehicles in normal D trains. It was to take until the mid-1970s before the last apron coaches were finally withdrawn from the DB's rolling stock in reserve parks for military and troop transports. The wagons remaining with the Deutsche Reichsbahn Ost were transferred to the DR Ost in the early 1960s in modernization programmes and converted into so-called modernization wagons. In addition, some vehicles remained with ÖBB and SNCF.
