The prototype Between 1959 and 1977, the DeutscheBundesbahn DB purchased a total of more than 4800 cars in three layouts for use in commuter service and also to reinforce express trains: Pure 2nd class, 1st and 2nd class, and control cars with baggage and 2nd class compartments. The car family was assigned the generic letter "n". One prototype car already had the unpainted outer skin with a brushed peacock's eye pattern responsible for the nickname "Silberlinge". The absence of a paint scheme reduced the weight by about two tons. With a total weight of between 27 and 30 t, the second-class cars, for example, were at least 5 t lighter than the pre-war express train cars of the 1936 design. The initially installed axle generator type D62 limited the maximum speed to 120 km/h. The 140 km/h permitted by the running technology was 140 km/h. The maximum speed of the first class cars was also reduced. The 140 km/h permitted for running purposes could be run with a different axle generator type or by cars powered electrically by the traction unit. In 1969, the DB procured a total of 180 examples of the Bnrzb724 design, which could easily be converted to hospital cars in the event of a disaster. A striking difference from the cars manufactured before is the almost vertical roof end ("steep roof"). The first cab control cars had a passageway to the next car at the end of the cab, which is why the engineer sat in a drafty little room ("bunny box") to the right of the aisle. Starting in 1972, DB received cab cars with the modern "Karlsruhe head". In order to make commuter service more attractive, DB had several sets modernized on the inside and painted in pebble gray-orange on the outside starting in 1984 and used them with a matching 218 under the product name City-Bahn. The success of the product prompted DB to modernize other cars starting in 1990 with newly upholstered seats, modified luggage racks and a new exterior paint scheme. This resulted in a large number of different variants of the types known as re-design cars, which were initially painted in the then-current mint turquoise light gray. Starting in 1993, DB received control cars with the VT 628 railcar reminiscent of the cab side, the "Wittenberg head." In 2019, 60 years after the first Silberlinge entered service, there are still cars in daily service.
