Starting in 1970, the German State Railroad purchased the type Y/B 70 passenger coaches, which were further developed from the UIC Y coaches. These were compartment coaches for express train service. Until the 1980s, they were the preferred vehicles for the Berlin - West Germany transit trains and for other international long-distance trains. They also regularly came to West Germany with the interzonal trains.
