In the 1980s, the CSD and the DR decided to procure dual-system locomotives to facilitate the ever-increasing traffic and operations on the Berlin-Dresden-Prague cross-border route. However, the locomotive builder in the GDR, LEW Hennigsdorf, was working at full capacity at the time, so the Czech locomotive factory Skoda, which already had various experiences with such machines, was awarded the contract. The CSD series ES 499.1 and 499.2 offered themselves as a basis. However, the German 15 kV/16? Hz system was new territory. The double order included 15 BR 372 locomotives for the CSD and 20 BR 230 locomotives for the DR. The universal locomotives were used for passenger and freight service. With an hourly output of 3,260 kW, a top speed of 120 km/h was achieved. In Germany, the class is affectionately called the "dumpling press," while the Czech counterpart is called the "bastard" in the neighboring country.
