The rapid modernization of the Austrian electric locomotive fleet began with the commissioning of the first "Taurus" class 1016 locomotive in the summer of 1999. A dual-system version of this universal locomotive was also procured for AC operation at 15 kV/16.7 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz. By 2006, 282 locomotives of the 1116 series had entered service. They are licensed for 230 km/h. The output is 6,400 kW.
