In order to speed up traction changes, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) procured a total of 378 class V 200 (later BR 120) locomotives from the Soviet Union between 1966 and 1975. As the locomotives lacked a train heating system ex works, they were mainly used for freight trains. Later, silencers were also added to reduce the noise level of the engines. Due to the loud engine noise, the locomotives quickly earned the name "Taiga drum".
