Prototype info V 100 - East The DR was also working on replacements for steam locomotives in the 1950s. For light to medium passenger and freight train and shunting service, previously handled by class 38, 55, 57, 78 and 93 steam locomotives, adequate replacements were needed. The V 100 was designed for this purpose, originally with 1,000 hp. From 1970, the locomotives were classified as class 110 (later also class 108 with 1,020 hp). In the 1980s, the locomotives received more powerful engines: Class 112 with 1,100 hp and Class 114 with 1,500 hp. By the way, the driving switch was operated by a Trabant steering wheel.
