The 212 series is considered to be the direct substructure series of the V 100, as it was built according to its development requirements. Only a more powerful engine with 993 kW was used in the locomotive. Put into service from 1962 to 1965 as the BR V 100.20, it was also intended for main line and steep line service, in contrast to the V 100.10 used in branch line service. The locomotives were considered to be very robust and reliable, achieving high, trouble-free mileages. The locomotives were widely used in almost all of Germany.
