In order to select suitable machines for electric operation on the Gotthard, Swiss industry supplied four test locomotives for various purposes in 1919, including Fc 2x3/4 (from 1920: Ce 6/8I) 12201 as a freight locomotive. It was a (1'C)(C1') freight locomotive with special consideration of the track conditions on the Gotthard and could pull a maximum of 860 t of trailer load at a gradient of up to 12 ‰. Its locomotive body rested on two three-axle motor bogies, each of which was driven by two traction motors via jackshaft, driving and coupling rods. Originally planned only as a six-axle machine, the electrical part turned out to be so heavy that two additional sets of running wheels as well as small front structures became necessary. The locomotive was soon nicknamed the "Köfferli locomotive" on account of these projections, but "Schlotterbeck" also came into use later on on account of its unsteady running.Between 1921 and 1938, the Ce 6/8I 12201 (from 1930: 14201) ran on the Gotthard. Then it went to Basel with probation in heavy freight service. With increasingly sparse operations, her withdrawal from normal service took place until 1967. However, as a unique historic locomotive, it was awaiting preservation and was assigned to the Bern depot for braking tests. An excellently executed running gear overhaul in 1968 at the main workshop in Yverdon suddenly gave the veteran better running characteristics than ever before. After a mileage of around 2,500,000 km, the locomotive was finally retired at the end of May 1982. For many years, it then served as a reminder of the pioneering days of electric traction at the SBB in the Museum of Transport in Lucerne. In the meantime, it is on display at the Erstfeld depot, where it is excellently looked after by the SBB Historic Team Erstfeld.
